南アフリカで乗馬　Horseback riding in South Africa

サバンナに生きる野生動物の大地を乗馬で巡る、佐藤美子写真家の体験レポートを掲載しました。南アフリカ共和国の乗馬記事、馬ライフUMA LIFE 誌1号特集「今年こそ行ってみたい！地球の馬スポット4選」です。頼るのは、己と相棒の馬。爽快で、理屈は吹っ飛んでしまいます。かつて乗馬クラブで、スピード狂と呼ばれて怒られていた本領を発揮しました。是非ご一読ください（メトロポリタンプレス刊）。

乗馬レッスンは、馬の撮影を始めてから開始しました。「馬は人が乗る動物。写真を撮るからには、自分が乗らなくては」という、単純な職業的使命感でした。とはいうものの、初回で心を捉えられました。馬の活力が、自分の身体に入ってくるような感動。感受性が強く、誇り高い動物であることを肌身に感じたからです。そして、不思議なノスタルジア。「自分はこの揺れを知っている」。懐かしく、忘れていたものを取り戻したような気がしました。

UMA LIFE magazine published its 1st issue in 2026. The “Horse Riding in overseas countries” featured Yoshiko Sato’s South African Republic’s Horseback riding experience. Yoshiko Sato was called a speed freak at the horseback riding school before, so it was a precious moment to enjoy riding on the same ground where wild animals live. Refreshing and pure joy of life never fades away.

Yoshiko Sato took photographs of horses at the Horse Festival in Italy for the first time. Coming back to Japan, immediately joined the horseback riding lesson. To capture the essence of horses in my photos, I’ve decided to take up horseback riding first to get to know them more deeply. Horses are such sensitive and proud animals.

And also, there was a strange nostalgia. “I already know this motion.”  It was like I regained a forgotten custom.
